Best AM Radio Personality : Neil Headrick

Prince Albert and area residents have been waking up to Neil Headrick and his morning show on 900 CKBI for nearly 30 years.

Headrick said he began his career as a radio personality after a discussion he had with an acquaintance about music, something they were both passionate about. Headrick said he suggested to the general manager of the station at the time, Jim Scarrow, that 900 CKBI didn’t play enough oldies.

“He said I will give you three hours on Sunday morning if you come in and bring your records and you play a bunch of oldies,” said Headrick.

“I said I can’t do that I have never been on the radio before and he said well give it a try. So that was October 14 1984. I went in and thought well I will try this for a couple of weeks and now fast forward 30 years and here we are.”

Headrick said this October will mark 30 years since he played his first song on 900 CKBI.

“The first song I ever played on Sunday morning was Rock Around The Clock by Bill Haley and His Comets,” said Headrick. “ I remember it like it was yesterday.”

Two years later Headrick went from providing the music part time to taking over the morning show.

“The technological changes that have happened since my time have been remarkable,” he said.

Headrick explained how the station went from playing 45’s and LP records, then changed to carts which was similar to an 8-track tape, then CD’s, then digital. He said approximately 10 years ago the station also changed its format.

“We changed our format to contemporary country music or new country as it might be called because it is one of the most popular formats in North America without question,” he said. “And so we wanted a Prince Albert connection to that format and the rest is history.”

Today 900 CKBI is known for playing todays best country. And from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. you can tune in with Neil Headrick.
