P.A. restaurant owners give tips on healthy eating

Jan 25, 2019 | 10:22 AM

With the new Canada Food Guide revealed this week, one P.A. restaurateur has some advice to locals looking to eat healthy.

Niall Kerr, owner of the Tartan Table in Prince Albert, said root vegetables are the best to add to your plate during cold weather.

“Definitely carrots, they’re a really good price. I can get yellow, purple, the usual orange carrots. Lots of beets, I work with lots of beets, yellow and the regular purple,” Kerr said.

When on the lookout for fresh produce, Kerr visits the local farmers market, local growers and grocery stores. To avoid unhealthy options when shopping, Kerr advises focusing on aisles with unprocessed goods.

Kerr said changes to the guide won’t affect his menu much.

“For me, (the menu) will pretty much stay the same, because I focus a lot on vegetables,” he said.

Shananigans chef and owner Jeannette Kindzerski said there’s an appetite for healthy options in the city.

“The clientele I have here are looking for healthy choices, homemade goods that are baked, not made by a franchise,” Kindzerski said.

Kindzerski said being the chef allows her the freedom to make her items from scratch which allows her to add fresh vegetables and cook without the use of preservatives.
