Crowded race in the standings at the Canadian curling juniors

Jan 24, 2019 | 9:44 PM

The Team Quebec men picked up a huge 8-3 win over Newfoundland and Labrador to stay in the playoff hunt at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships on Thursday night at the Art Hauser Centre.

Quebec skip Vincent Roberge, as well as Jesse Mullen, Simon-Olivier Hebert and Bradley Lequin improved to 5-4 to stay alive with the victory. They are now one of three teams tied at 5-4, along with Newfoundland and Northern Ontario, who are all still eligible for the top three. That’s what’s needed to move on, as the second and third seeds will play the semifinals, and meet the top-ranked team for the gold medal.

All three of them are behind third place Manitoba (6-3). Saskatchewan and British Columbia have already clinched berths with their 8-1 records.

On the women’s side, it looks a little more defined as Alberta (9-0), Quebec (7-2) and British Columbia (7-2) are all in the top three currently. But defending world champion winning Nova Scotia (6-3) has a fighting chance, as they match up against Quebec at 9 a.m. at the Prince Albert Curling Club on Friday. That could cause a few shifts in the standings before the semifinals.
