Baby born on Diefenbaker Bridge

Jan 23, 2019 | 10:46 AM

We’ve all heard of a breech birth, but how about a bridge birth?

That’s what happened at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a patient being taken to Victoria Hospital had her child delivered in the ambulance on the Diefenbaker Bridge.

Director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance, Lyle Karasiuk, said the crew stopped and did their thing.

“They have emergency warning lights to alert the traffic and our paramedics Levon and Chris engaged in the emergency out-of-hospital protocol, he told paNOW. “In this case everything just went text book so to speak.”

Karasiuk said the mom and baby boy – her fourth child- are doing fine and it was the first out-of-hospital delivery for Parkland Ambulance this year. He couldn’t say where the mom was from except to say she was from out of town.

“It’s not often we get a chance to do an out-of-hospital delivery; but certainly in these days when our paramedics face some very troubling calls, it’s so nice to share a good news story like this” he said.

While mom and child are doing fine, the matter of place of birth needs to be resolved.

“Like when people were born on the farm years ago it will give a land location; you know they’ll have a unique birth certificate,” Karasiuk said.

If was not immediately known what name the family was to give to their newest addition. Online baby naming website babycenter.com noted around 19,000 boys were named ‘Bridge’ in 2018.
