Celebrating diversity and multiculturalism

Jan 24, 2019 | 9:00 AM

The Prince Albert Multicultural Council (PAMC) is hosting its second Diversity Night Thursday to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism in the community.

The evening will feature a variety of culturally inspired events, including Dene culture presentations and hand games, a lesson on Irish dancing from the Ashden School of Irish dance, and a medley of Syrian and Ukrainian food.

Michelle Hassler, the acting executive-director with the PAMC, said the event was created to explore and celebrate the diversity of cultures within Prince Albert.

“Diversity Night was modelled from the Common Ground project we started two years ago, basically what it does is bridges all these different cultures together,” Hassler said. “We wanted to continue and do more multicultural and anti-racism initiatives in the community. We came up with Diversity Night in partnership with the City of Prince Albert’s Municipal Cultural Action plan.”

The event will be held at the YWCA, Wesley Church, with activities starting at 6 p.m.

“All of our Diversity Nights are free admission. Everyone is welcome to attend and everyone is welcome to participate,” Hassler said. “What we want is to bring the community together and we’ll celebrate, and learn all the different cultures that comprise Prince Albert right now.”

The first Diversity Night saw an attendance of roughly 80 people, something that Hassler noted she hopes to see again.

“We’re hoping to have at least 50 people,” she said. “We’re looking at hosting our third Diversity Night on March 21, in celebration of the international day for the elimination of racial discrimination.”

The evening is free for anyone interested in attending.
