Roger Millions on Hockey Day in Shellbrook

Jan 15, 2019 | 11:00 AM

This weekend, not unlike any other weekend during the winter months, the Shellbrook Recreation Complex will be the gathering point of the community.

For the fourth-straight year, Hockey Day in Shellbrook will take over the community arena with events beginning Friday and running through Saturday night including a senior hockey game, a Midget AAA Female hockey game, public skating, and a banquet.

The banquet will be emceed by Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, a Shellbrook native, and headlined by former NHL’er Robyn Regehr and long-time broadcaster Roger Millions.

For Millions, who spent time in Prince Albert at CKBI early on in his broadcasting days, he understands the importance of a small-town arena.

“I grew up in a town of 210 people in southwestern Manitoba, I know what small communities are all about, I know the collective nature and what a hockey arena can mean,” said Milions.

After retiring from a 39-year broadcasting career in early 2018, the award-winning NHL broadcaster has more time to do events like this and is looking forward to making his way to Shellbrook.

“Very honoured. My days in the Prince Albert area, along with Shellbrook and the lakes and everything to the south and to the east, it was a wonderful time in my career and it set myself up for a nice almost 40-year career,” said Millions.

From his time in Prince Albert, there were countless people that came to mind for Millions who helped him along the way, but he specifically singled out former Raiders broadcaster Morley Jaeger, station manager Jim Scarrow, and broadcasters John Wessel, Don Mitchell, Jack Cennon, and Gord Barnett.

On the topic of Jaeger, Millions remembers that he was “well ahead of his years in terms of being a play-by-play man, he understood the entertainment factor of hockey well before hundreds of people did.”

All proceeds from this weekend’s events will go toward improvements of the arena.
