Broncos bus crash truck driver case adjourned, discussions ongoing

The case involving Jaskirat Sidhu, the semi truck driver in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash back in April 2018, has once again been adjourned.

Satnam Aujla, Sidhu’s lawyer, appeared on his client’s behalf over the phone in Calgary, where he told Judge Inez Cardinal that he and Crown prosecutor Thomas Healey agreed to adjourn the case until Tuesday, Dec. 18 to have more discussions between both sides.

Cardinal mentioned she hoped to see the matter move along during the next court appearance.

Healey wasn’t in court on Nov. 27, but was represented by Wade Rogers as the Crown prosecutor. Healey said in a court appearance on Oct. 2 that he wanted to stay on as Crown counsel for the Sidhu case.

The case will resume on Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Melfort Provincial Court for defence election and plea. If Sidhu pleads not guilty, he can elect to be tried by a judge and jury, or judge alone.

Sidhu is charged with 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death along with 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the Broncos bus crash.

Sidhu was released on a $1,000 deposit during his first appearance on July 10 in Melfort Provincial Court.
