Many sisters like to do things together, and in the case of the Fehr sisters, their hobby is winning gold medals.

Shayna and Nadine Fehr both competed in the alpine ski event in the Saskatchewan Winter Games at Wapiti ski hill on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

In the end, they will both be returning home with double gold. Two gold medals each.

Some people may compare them to the Dufour-Lapionte sisters who recently competed in the Sochi Winter Olympics. Justine and Chloe took gold and silver in women’s skiing moguls.

When asked what they think of this, Nadine was pretty thrilled.

“It makes me think that if me and my sister go to the Olympics that we could do the same thing,” she said.

Sisters who train together, win together, apparently.

Nadine, 11, competed in the under 12 category, and Shayna, 12, in the under 14 category.

According to Shayna, their age difference doesn’t mean much. “She’s in an age category younger than me but she’s always faster than me, so we’re always kind of trying to go faster than each other and have little competitions against each other I guess,” she said, laughing.

Shayna also uses the competition with her sister to push her to do better.

“It’s really fun. She’s someone that I look up to. She’s doing really well this year so she’s somebody that I want to race with sometime. Next year, I’ll be in the same [age group] with her so it’ll be fun to have a little more competition with her,” she said.

Both the girls started skiing at age two or three in a learn to ski program called Snow Stars. The coach eventually encouraged them to join the race team, as the lessons were too basic for them.

There’s something about the escape from everything that the sport offers Shayna that keeps her going again and again. The moment when she flies done the hill is very special to her.

“Everything’s gone and it’s just focusing on going fast and finishing the course. Like sometimes you wipe out but you just have to let it slide off and keep going,” said Shayna.

Nadine and Shayna will not be stopping their skiing careers here. Both have dreams for their future they’ll be working towards.
“I hope to someday to go to the Olympics and do slalom or GS,” said Nadine.

Shayna has even more immediate goals. “I hope to go to Canada Winter Games next year if I can qualify this year,” she said. Nadine will still be too young to participate.

Shayna also wants an Olympic career in the future.

Even though the Fehr sisters are expected to do well, they still keep the mood light and their sport fun.

“I want to do good but I still have all my friends that race and are also trying for the same thing. So I like to cheer them on and I don’t feel a whole lot of pressure,” said Shayna.

The Fehr sisters are from a farm near Rosetown and train weekly at Table Mountain. They both said they highly enjoyed their Winter Games experience.
