Silvernagle takes title at 2019 Viterra Scotties

Third time’s a charm for Robyn Silvernagle. 

The North Battleford skip outlasted Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson by a score of 6-5 to win the 2019 Viterra Scotties Provincial Championship in Humboldt.

For Silvernagle, the victory felt much sweeter, after falling in the finals the past two years – being defeated by Anderson in 2018. After the intense finish, Silvernagle was all smiles and said she’s ready to realize her dream.

“This would be the highlight, this is every (curlers) dream,” she said. “Being a girl you want to go to the Scotties … it’s the epitome of curling. You want to be there. This is number one.”

The game was back and forth throughout and leading into the tenth end it was anybody’s game. Silvernagle had set up the house in such a way that everyone in the crowd knew it would be tough for Anderson to score. Her final shot missed the take out she had expected, securing the victory for Silvernagle.

It’s been quite the year for Silvernagle following multiple World Curling Tour Championships along with qualifying and competing for the Meridian Canadian Open in North Battleford. Silvernagle said she couldn’t have done it without the overwhelming support of the Battlefords.

“They’ve just been so incredible. I know all of North Battleford was cheering for us. At the Slam, we had the biggest crowds, they were our cheerleaders and they’ve just been so, so supportive of our dreams,” she said.

The win will see Silvernagle’s rink playing in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, N.S. 

Lead Kara Thevenot has been through it all in the last four years. She described the feeling of finally getting over the hump and making it to the next level.

“It’s phenomenal. Not only are we teammates but we’re best friends,” she said. “You go through all of that together and it’s just a phenomenal feeling to be able to achieve that. It goes to show if you work hard you can get to where you want to go.”

For the foursome, preparations begin immediately. Silvernagle admitted even though it was time to celebrate it was also time to prepare and look ahead to the next challenge. The tournament runs Feb. 16 to the 24.
